Trip Overview

The Upper Mustang trek in this semi-independent Tibetan Kingdom’s isolated Trans-Himalayan Region provides an adventure route.  The Route includes superb walking through a dramatic semi-arid desert with colorful rock formations, deep ravines, and snow-capped peaks all around.

Mustang” is a magical and mystical Shangri-la. Hidden for centuries behind the Himalaya, this high and wild land has remained untarnished as Mustang stirs into modernity. Mustang has a long, rich, and complex history, making it one of Nepal’s most intriguing locales. Lo’s early history is steeped in tradition, myth, and mystery. However, there are records of occurrences dating back to the eighth century. Milarepa, a Tibetan poet who lived from 1040 to 1123, is likely to have visited Lo. Lo’s scenery is akin to the Tibetan plateau, with infinite vistas of wind-eroded yellow and gray undulating hills.

It’s an ancient Kingdom tucked away along the deepest river gorge in the world, the Kali Gandaki. A remote and starkly beautiful section of the “Tibetan” high altitude desert, bordered to the South by some of the Highest Mountains- Annapurna & Dhaulagiri.

We continue the exploration of the Upper Mustang trek by jeep and trek. Started by the early, intrepid explorers of the Himalaya, taking some of the less-traveled routes through this Sun-drenched region.

Now is the right time to visit Upper Mustang while it is still pristine, intriguing, and with a sense of the forbidden.

You’ll also see the Tibetan Buddhist gompas and soaring snow-peaks. Those characteristics characterize this spectacular region, the “thumb” sticking up from Nepal into the Tibetan plateau.
